Iris Photo & Digital

Return to the list...

Iris Photo represents one of the more complex networks I have designed. Its structure is centralized around a M0n0wall BSD based firewall with four network interfaces and a CentOS Server running Samba as a primary domain controller with an LDAP directory backend.

The server handles the majority of storage, backup and file sharing with the printing system, while the firewall isolates the production segment of the network from the administrative and untrusted segments. There are several kiosks located in the store that allow users to dump images directly onto the master file server for print queuing. Additionally, there are image editing workstations for use by staff for more advanced editing.

The network is entirely cross platform, with computers running Win95, Win98, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, FreeBSD, Redhat Enterprise Linux, and Mac OS X 10.4. File sharing is handled mostly via Samba, but the Apple workstations communicate with NFS. Much of the printing system is proprietary FUJI hardware. However, there are several types of printers and scanners connected to the staff image editing workstations.

Additionally, there is a wireless network configured with a captive portal, for users that wish to connect directly and deliver photos from their computers.
